Awareness without action is worthless - Phil McGraw

Throughout the year, various agencies support a variety of initiatives to raise awareness and understanding of key health issues. Awareness weeks and months are meant to a fun way to engage the public in important health information.

October was Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Pink was everywhere, although sadly my long standing offer of free breast exams was a bit of a bust. <*snicker*> I still think “Save the Tatas” has the right blend of humor and awareness in their message. Cancer isn’t funny, but you have to have a sense of humor to survive.

This month, it’s the guys turn. Movember helps raise awareness for prostate cancer.
Mo-less John (in white)

During the campaign Movember educates the participating Mo Bros and Mo Sistas about how to prevent cancer through diet, fitness, lifestyle choices, an annual physical and preventative screening. These messages are not only getting through to these men and women, they are having a significant impact. A recent survey of the Movember community found that because of their involvement in the campaign, 39% of Mo Bros sought medical advice, while 36% encouraged someone else to seek medical advice.

Mo - Week 1
My running buddy John is growing a Mo. His company Alberto Culver Canada will match the total dollars raised for the great cause. Think about supporting John and his Mo.

And in all fairness ladies, now that I think about it, maybe the free breast exam wasn’t such a good idea. I was just offered a complimentary prostate exam.
